When Julie from Network World first started kicking around ideas with me for what A Better Windows World should be about, I thought the suggestion of tools for Windows was great. After all, I had been in many diverse environments, including riding the dotcom bubble for a while. All those startups meant that I was exposed to a lot of different technologies and the tools to manage them. So writing about tools to improve Windows seemed a natural fit. Now, 10 months into this and one of the things that I have come to appreciate is the almost overwhelming amount of tools for IT Administrators. I am close to coming up on covering my 200th tool and it does not seem to have an end. I thought that I had seen it all and I have quickly learned that I have only begun to scratch the surface. One of the hardest things is that many tools are a different approach to the same problems: This is actually also one of the coolest things about the job. You can find that one thing that is needed by an organization. That one feature or plug-in that makes it work for you. And that is what I have enjoyed the most, reading the comments that let me know that I have introduced something that works to help someone solve that IT challenge in their environment. It has been truly amazing to look at the approaches from the standpoint of Windows, open source and cross platform solutions. One of the things that I would like more of is reader input. I have had a few respond (see Readers Choice for best OSS projects) to postings and offer suggestions or alternatives to tools I have written about. I would love to hear from more of my readers, tell me what you love, tell me what you hate, and tell me what might be over/under rated.
