Symantec announced last week at VMworld 2011 that they are adding new V-Ray technology and other enhancements to Backup Exec 2010.
V-Ray technology provides Symantec applications with enhanced visibility into virtual machines. V-Ray technology is designed to make it easier to secure, protect, backup and recover virtual machines. V-Ray also provides backup administrators with a catalog view of their backups, allowing them to select entire backup sets or single objects to restore. It also allows backup administrators to find and restore objects inside Exchange, SQL and Active Directory and can automatically identify and backup new virtual machines added to a VMware environment.
This version of Backup Exec 2010 also supports VMware’s forthcoming release of vSphere 5. It also integrates with Symantec Application HA. According to Symantec, “Application HA leverages VMware HA’s app-awareness API to provide comprehensive application availability in VMware environments. Symantec Application HA and VMware HA together protect against application failures, virtual machine and physical host failures.” If an application fails, Application HA will attempt to remediate the problem. If it can’t it will trigger a restore of that application. V-Ray also includes a new virtual machine validator feature designed to validate the recoverability of VM backups. This feature, which integrates with the vCenter server administration console, is designed to speed the recovery of critical systems.
Backup Exec 2010, targeted to the SMB market, provides a comprehensive backup solution for both physical and virtual systems. It provides backup for Windows, Unix, Linux, NetWare and Macintosh as well as major database systems. New enhancements add to Backup Exec’s ability to fully support VMware environments.
