OCZ rolls out new solid state drive

SANRAD launched its VXL software last week with support for flash memory. The VXL software provides caching support for multiple virtual machines over host-based flash resources. It is deployed as a virtual appliance on the host server and distributes flash capability to applications such as Microsoft SQL Server and Exchange.

The software supports flash acceleration and allocation, SLA protection for business-critical applications, VMware vMotion, cache and live migration and finally, high availability and data mirroring.

The algorithm VXL uses for caching decides what data to cache on the flash memory. It supports VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V and Xen hypervisors.

OCZ Technology Group also rolled out SSDs for caching. The Synapse Cache Series 2.5 SSDs are intended for placement in server and storage systems. They use the Dataplex cache software to tier data across the SSD and hard disk drives.

This Dataplex caching software prioritizes the most frequently used data on the Synapse Cache SSD, while less frequently used data is stored on the larger capacity hard disk drive.

The OCZ Synapse Cache SSDs are available now in 2.5-inch SATA III 64GB and 128GB configurations.

Finally, a survey from Storage Strategies NOW and the Storage Networking Industry Association shows that 87% of the respondents either have already adopted or are interested in adopting solid state devices. Nearly 43% will adopt SSDs to support OLTP, 45% to support transaction-intensive database operations and 32% to support the virtual desktop infrastructure.
