Fireflies emphasize call for energy sources that produce no carbon
Last year, Bill Gates released mosquitoes into the audience at the TED conference while he talked about fighting malaria. This year, he held up a jar of fireflies to emphasize his point that the world needs sources of energy that produce no carbon.
Gates championed development of so-called terrapower reactors that could be fueled by nuclear waste and would be more reliable than wind or solar, cleaner than burning coal or natural gas, and safer than current nuclear plants. “We need energy miracles,” Gates said, according to a story by Agence France-Presse (AFP). TED is a nonprofit organization dedicated to “ideas worth spreading.” Its TED2010 conference was held Feb. 9-13 in Long Beach, Calif.
