Posted by Cisco Subnet Editor Julie Bort: Readers asked me to sign on more bloggers who cover technology and so I present to you our newest blogger, Erik Parker. Erik is a wireless guru and will be penning the new “No Strings Attached” blog, covering wireless LANs. He’ll write about little-known features to tweak your wireless performance, give his opinions on great wireless products in the market, from Cisco and others, and discuss other topics that strikes his fancy.
Erik is a wireless network engineer for a Fortune 500 e-commerce company based in the United States. Erik was previously a wireless engineer at Toyota and consulting network engineer for International Network Services (Now BT-INS) prior to that. He has experience with routing, switching, wireless, security, and Linux systems engineering. He is currently focused mostly on wireless infrastructure, 802.11 protocol analysis, RF, and mobility.
Erik’s hobbies include arm-chair electronics using Arduino, Parallax, and nearly anything else you can hook random sensors into. Erik has maintained his CISSP designation since 2000, has spoken at multiple Gartner mobility summits, and continues to be active in the wireless community.
In his first post, he delves into an access point feature known as Short Guard Interval. Under the right circumstance SGI can increase your performance, but it also has a few drawbacks.
Next up, he’ll be writing his thoughts about Cisco’s new 1260/3500 APs. He’s also got a multi-part series in the works for you about why the time might be ripe to finally ax support of 802.11b in your 802.11n (or even 11g) network.
