Salutes "attention to" framework but stops short of endorsing actual blueprint

Cisco this week “noted its appreciation” for the work that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) put into the development of the draft the NIST Framework and Roadmap for Smart Grid Interoperability Standards – Release 1.0. In a statement on its appreciation however, Cisco did not come out and tacitly support or endorse the draft.

Instead, Cisco said it supports the “attention” NIST paid to the draft framework and to the “importance of enhanced security” in the smart grid. Cisco was involved in the NIST Cybersecurity Coordination Task Group.

Said Cisco Fellow Fred Baker in the statement:

“Cisco is actively involved in standards development activities related to the smart grid and looks forward to continuing to work closely with NIST, the standards development community, our customers and partners to help accelerate the migration towards an Internet Protocol-based, interoperable, scalable, extensible, reliable and secure communications network for the smart grid.”

Cisco said it looks forward to enhanced cooperation among standards development organizations, including NIST and the IETF. Within the last 10 days, Cisco announced a smart grid partner ecosystem, technical advisory board for utility companies and plans for joining the ZigBee Alliance. The ecosystem is comprised of more than 25 companies working to establish the interoperability of smart grid systems and advocate the adoption of IP as a standard communications protocol for next generation utility infrastructures.
