The main reason I purchased a Kindle was for my trip to Japan. I did not want to have to carry an excess of books, both work and pleasure, on my long journey. OK, on the flight over, they showed us 4 movies but to be honest, I spent most of the journey reading “The Sleeper Awakes” by H.G. Wells – a free download from amazon.com. 16 hours later the Kindle was still running with a few hours to spare. But wait there’s more… What I did not realise was that whispernet, the download service from amazon.com, works now in many different countries, including Japan. This free download service is provided through cellular networks like AT&T. That means that my subscriptions, for instance to The Times newspaper in the UK, continued to land on my virtual doorstep every day even during my stay in Japan. As soon as a new edition is available, it is downloaded, even while the Kindle is in sleep mode. Very cool. By the way, on the way to the airport, I had my Kindle read to me the just-downloaded edition of The Times via its experimental text-to-voice feature over my car’s stereo system. They’ll have to work on introducing a British accent, otherwise it was not too bad. I know Apple is coming out with it’s iSlate or iTablet announcement on January 26th, but I am beginning to think that it is just going to be a large version of their iPod touch, which I am sure will be very successful. Personally, if it’s eBooks you want, I am sold on the Kindle. cheers Brian
