Microsoft (MSFT) has lost a six-year patent infringement case with Uniloc and has been ordered to pay $388 million in damages. Uniloc USA and its Singapore-based parent originally filed suit in 2003 over anti-piracy software. Uniloc claimed that Microsoft had infringed on its patents with technology Microsoft used to prevent unlicensed use of its Windows XP operating system and parts of its Office suite of products. Microsoft plans to appeal the verdict, reports Reuters.
The Wednesday decision is a reversal of an earlier judgment in which the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island found in favor of Microsoft that no infringement had occurred, reports PCWorld. Uniloc appealed and won. In August, the U.S. Court of Appeals remanded the matter back to the District Court for a trial.
