Kevin Rose spills the beans on "Cut and Paste" in upcoming iPhone software update
During a live taping of Diggnation at the South by Southwest Conference this weekend, Digg founder Kevin Rose delivered some news that should make all iPhone owners happy. Specifically, Rose indicated that the next iteration of the iPhone OS will include support for cut and paste. Now iPhone users can all breathe a sigh of relief and let out a collective, “FINALLY!” According to Rose, cut and paste will work as follows: When a word is double-tapped, a magnification bubble with 2 quotation marks will appear. Users can then move the quotation marks around to envelop the desired selection, and from there, they can choose to either cut, copy, or paste. For such a seemingly simple solution, it’s puzzling why Apple has chosen to wait nearly two years before deciding to implement a feature that users have been longing for ever since the iPhone was first announced. According to Apple, cut and paste has always been on their radar, but they’ve been pre-occupied with other features that they deemed to be more important. That may well be the case. Or, a spicier explanation might be that Apple is simply pulling out some stops so that it can minimize any perceived or actual advantages that critics believe the upcoming Palm Pre will have over the iPhone. Regardless of Apple’s motives, the bottom line is that users will come out on top, and that’s really all that matters. When cut and paste will actually become available, however, is an entirely different question. While Apple is holding a special media event this Tuesday where it will reveal details about the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 software, it remains unclear if the software update will be available sometime soon, or if Apple is holding off on it until it releases a new iPhone model, presumably sometime this June.
