The Top 10 “In The News” list on the computer-generated front page of Google News does indeed say a lot this morning, although I’m not sure whether it’s speaking more to the mysterious ways of hands-free Google News or the sports and celebrity obsessions of modern society.
I suspect the latter, but Google is famously parsimonious about parceling out homepage real estate, so we are safe in presuming that the company considers this list meaningful in some way. See if you agree:
In The News
1. Retief Goosen: Won this weekend’s PGA golf tournament. I like to watch golf on TV, but generally don’t admit as much and cannot fathom why the outcome of this event would command such prominence in any forum not a country club.
2. Andy Murray: A tennis player previously unfamiliar to me. I know only one person who’s into tennis and I don’t know if her interest includes watching others play.
3. Rafael Nadal: A tennis player who I did know because I’ll usually watch snippets of the Wimbledon finals. Seems he defeated mystery man Murray yesterday.
4. Natasha Richardson: Tragic.
5. Liam Neeson: Sympathies.
6. Kyle Busch: A NASCAR driver who won yesterday’s race. I’m not into NASCAR, but I thought I understood that interest in it dwarfs that of professional golf and tennis.
7. Indian Wells: The California community where Rafael Nadal beat the guy whose name I didn’t recognize.
8. Timothy Geithner: Answer if this list was a “which one is not like the others?” quiz.
9. Nicolas Cage: Loved him in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
10. Calista Flockhart: Am I the only one who thought they were already married?
Guess it was a slow news weekend.
