HP is not scared of the blade server in Cisco new Unified Computing System. So says an executive in HP’s blade busiess in this article in TheStreet.com.
“Are we scared? No,” Jim Ganthier, vice-president of H-P’s blade business, told TheStreet.com. “They are coming to the party a little bit late.”
That they are. But that doesn’t stop blader server incumbents like HP and IBM from arming themselves for an imminent battle.
Many believe IBM’s interest in Sun Microsystems is in part a defensive move in anticipation of Cisco’s creeping presence in the data center. Some also believe HP will consider M&A as a way to better prepare for Cisco’s blade server assault.
But Cisco will be challenged to find acceptance for its blade server system among data center managers who for decades have purchased the systems from HP, IBM, Dell and/or Sun. And Ganthier points this out metaphorically in the TheStreet.com article:
“Who would you rather have build your home?” asked Ganthier. “An architect or a plumber?”
