TelePresence, collaboration saving Cisco millions

Cisco is saving millions annually by eating its own dog food. The real question though is, how much is it making by getting others to eat it?

During a keynote address at this week’s VoiceCon conference in Orlando, Cisco CTO Padma Warrior said Cisco has cut its own travel cosst by $1.4 million in one year with TelePresence and other collaboration tools, and realized another $137 million in improved margins from using the tools to shorten the time to close deals.

Warrior demonstrated use of the company’s UC gear to connect a man to a doctor’s office via TelePresence, according to a dispatch from colleague Tim Greene. The speech of the doctor, who spoke Cantonese, was translated into text that was displayed in English at the bottom of the screen.

Later, using a new Cisco TelePresence recording feature, the doctor left his prescription. The patient then viewed it on a PC at lower resolution then on a handheld device to show the system’s ability to reformat the video to fit the receiving device, Greene reports.

Such capabilties will redefine work as we know it, Warrior said. It will also save Cisco buckets of money apparently, and make it even more — if enough enterprises and service providers follow the Cisco gravy train.
