Google G1 hits a million in sales

T-Mobile has sold a million G1s in the six months since the Android-based smartphone’s debut, and while the number pales in comparison to iPhone sales (Apple reported it sold 3.79 million iPhones in Q1 2009 alone), it shows that Android is well on its way to the banner year predicted by Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

eWeek reports that the millionth sale threshold was announced by Deutsche Telekom, parent company of G1 carrier T-Mobile. The carrier obviously likes what it sees in Android, and is in fact already planning at least two more Android-based devices, a home phone and a tablet computer.

Add to that reported plans from big PC makers like HP and Acer to base netbooks on Android, and Google’s bet on the open source mobile OS seems to be paying off, big time.
