Microsoft has at last released SQL Server 2008 SP1 and what do you know, the powers that be have listened to us and given us Slipstreaming. That’s awesome. I discussed this in a previous blog entry so I am very pleased to see the Slipstream option reappearing after a long absence. Let’s take a look…
SP1 is really a simple combination of Cumulative Updates 1, 2 and 3 and unlike the 2005 service packs, does not contain any major new features. The build is 10.0.2531 and should now force many customers to evaluate this latest release. I have already heard of many customers planning to go straight from SQL Server 2000 to 2008 SP1.
Not since SQL Server 2000 SP3a have we seen a slipstreamed version of SQL Server. This special option means that we can install SQL Server and the latest service pack in one single install. Most SQL Server service packs touch many parts of the product and are not trivial installs, so to be able to avoid a separate upgrade process is a big gain.
Another feature in SQL Server 2008 SP1 is an uninstall feature which will also add to our productivity should we need to revert without having to restore the whole server.
Both slipstreaming and uninstall have been conspicuous by their absence so we welcome home these prodigal sons. Time to Celebrate!
Cheers
Brian
