Cisco revamps CCIE R&S certification

As noted by blogger Wendell Odom, Cisco this week revamped its CCIE routing and switching certification in response to the “evolving size, scope and complexity” of enterprise networks. The revisions include changes to the lab testing format to include hands-on troubleshooting integrated with “expert level” lab exercises in evaluating network changes.

The average salary of a CCIE in the US is $120,330, Cisco says, citing data from a salary survey by Certification Magazine last December. Citing data from PayScale.com, Cisco says the salary premium of a network engineer with a CCIE certification is 20% higher than a network engineer with 10 to 19 years of experience without a CCIE certification.

The updates in CCIE R&S v4.0 reflect the growing use of IPv6 multicast, MPLS and VPNs in the enterprise, Cisco says. In addition to hands-on troubleshooting, testing changes include the addition of scenario-based questions in the written examination.

Odom notes the revised CCIE R&S v4.0 exams are scheduled for release on Oct. 18. They will replace the currently available v3.0 exams, Cisco says.

Cisco also updated the 360 Learning Program for CCIE R&S certification to align with the new CCIE R&S standards. New materials include additional self-paced lessons on MPLS and troubleshooting, enhanced coverage of those topics in the instructor-led workshops, an updated practice lab workbook for self-paced practice, and new performance assessments that gauge skill level and offer mentoring feedback.

The new 360 program will be available later this month. CCIE Assessor, Cisco’s original CCIE R&S practice lab, will be retired on June 5 and replaced with Cisco 360 Learning Program Performance Assessments.
