Server 2008 Foundation

So you thought you knew all the versions of Windows Server 2008? As you may have heard, there’s a new flavor from Microsoft, named Server 2008 “Foundation.” When I was in college, it seemed that most of my textbooks included “foundation” in the name: “Foundations of Economics,” “Foundations of Modern Europe,” etc. It’s a good name for a starting-point product, and Server 2008 Foundation is meant to be the first ever server used by companies just big enough to finally need one.

Server 2008 Foundation is designed for very simple licensing. You can have 15 users and that’s it! No muss, no fuss, no Client Access Licenses, no VM licenses. There must be a lot of companies who are beginning to outgrow their workgroup networks and would love to have a product like this. Apparently it’s only sold through OEM channels however, which seems like kind of a shame. What if I’m a small business and I want to migrate up to 2008 Server but I don’t really need a new machine?

Anyway, I’ll have a fair amount to say about this product in coming posts. For one thing, I’m curious about the specific differences between this product and the SBS product. I also want to find out what the exact limitations are compared to Server 2008 Standard edition. Stay tuned!
