Microsoft claims that Bing produces more relevant search results than Google. Here’s an interesting little tool that allows you to create side-by-side search comparisons, in four languages and five international regions. With one keyword, you can debunk (or confirm) Bing’s claims. The tool has no particular name except “Search Google & Bing at the same time.” It was developed by German SEO company, Blackdog.
When we used the comparison tool to search for fitness clubs in Fort Collins, Colorado, we found that Google far and away returned more relevant results. Both sites offered a mapped list of fitness clubs of the top 10 (Google) the top seven (Bing) suggested results. All 10 of Google’s results were fitness clubs in the area. But two of Bing’s suggestions were grocery stores (Whole Foods and Albertsons). Guess Bing figures the searcher is really looking to eat, not exercise.
Grocery stores being returned in a top seven list on the search term “fitness clubs” is ironic enough. What’s really odd is that Bing uses a keyword called “Health Clubs and fitness” which is very close to the term we searched on. Albertson’s is tagged with that keyword but if you click on it to search some more, low and behold, the first result on Bing’s list is once again Whole Foods, a grocery store. Go figure.
