Duke Energy is the latest utility to enlist Cisco for a smart grid upgrade. Cisco has three years to help design an IP network that will allow Duke to monitor its distribution network and energy consumption in customers’ homes, according to this report from Tim Greene.
The network will be able to adjust energy consumption in homes equipped with energy management devices. Cisco will help develop and install these devices as well as new communications gear for electricity substations, according to Greene’s report.
Cisco unveiled its smart grid initiative last month. Market projections vary between $20 billion and $100 billion, and Cisco has said upgrading utility networks to IP is a bigger undertaking than the Internet.
Florida Power & Light is also a Cisco smart grid customer.
