In what might be a sign of things to come, AT&T has reportedly already sold out their pre-order supply of the upcoming iPhone 3G S. If you didn't get in on that action, it looks like you'll have to wait in line at an Apple Store if you wanna get your hands on the new video-enabled iPhone on launch day (June 19).
In what might be a sign of things to come, AT&T has reportedly already sold out their pre-order supply of the upcoming iPhone 3G S. If you didn’t get in on that action, it looks like you’ll have to wait in line at an Apple Store if you wanna get your hands on the new video-enabled iPhone on launch day (June 19). While the new iPhone brings with it many features that some feel are long over due, such as copy and paste video recording, and a better camera, AT&T’s upgrade pricing plan for current iPhone 3G owners has created quite a stir ofcontroversy . While new AT&T subscribers and those with expiring contracts will be able to purchase the new 16 and 32 GB iPhone models for $199 and $299 respectively, iPhone 3G owners will only be able to upgrade for $599 and $699. The reason for the discrepancy is that iPhone 3G owners are still in the first year of their 2-year AT&T contract. If those users were allowed to upgrade for either $199 or $299, then AT&T would be subsidizing 2iPhones in exchange for only a 3-year commitment. While this type of pricing scheme is common for high-end phones when customers want to upgrade before their original carrier contract expires, it has nonetheless touched a nerve among those who bought an iPhone 3G just last year. The brunt ofeveryone’s ire is obviously directed towards AT&T, which isn’t too popular among Apple fans these days in light of the fact that AT&T won’t support MMS on the iPhone until later this Summer and still hasn’t given us any information about when data tethering will finally be supported. In any event, the more costly upgrade plan for current iPhone 3G owners has prompted some to predict that the new iPhone 3G S won’t sell as well, relatively speaking, as the original iPhone 3G. If you recall, when the iPhone 3G first launched last July, lines formed out the door at a plethora of Apple Stores across the country. If AT&T’spre-order sellout is any indication, we might see something similar this June.
