ISR is an example of platform's new complexion

When asked if the definition of a router is changing — or if it is still accurate to refer to a hardware platform doing much more processing than routing — Cisco didn’t hesitate. The company pointed to its Integrated Services Router product as an example of how the face — and personality — of routers as we know them is changing.

So did Vyatta. Even though the open source networking company likes to tweak Cisco routers when marketing its products, they are more than mere routers. They’ll run virtually any open source networking application on a standard x86 hardware platform, including virtualization.

Several others weighed in on our What is a Router? story. Read what they had to say about the new, and old, characteristics of a router. And add your own thoughts to the mix.
