Donut is missing multitouch
Today Google released Donut, an update to Android Cupcake. Donut will be followed by Eclair and Flan and then perhaps by Tummy Ache, Cavity or Insulin. Clearly, Google wants developers to see Android and think, “Suh-weet!” But the dessert-themed code-names can’t overcome the fact that Donut is missing one of its star promised features: multitouch support.
Donut is not a new version of Android, but a new “development branch” of it, where features are tried, tested and will ultimately be blended with other such releases to become part of the next-generation Android operating system. Engadget says that Donut now shows off several features introduced at Google I/O in May, including universal search, text-to-speech to let users use Google Voice Search to find information, and other perks. Multitouch, a feature that Android will need to compete against the iPhone and the Pre, was expected but not had not yet appeared.
