Renewed focus internally by managers, investment firm reports

Cisco management has a “renewed focus” on regaining market share lost this calendar year and in Cisco’s fiscal 2009, reports investment firm UBS. UBS issued a bulletin this week recapping highlights of a recent meeting its analysts had with Cisco management.

UBS earlier this year reported that Cisco lost share across most of its major markets and product categories. Nowhere was that more evident than in SANs, where Cisco’s entry into the data center blade server business was blamed for the company’s dramatic market share loss by alienating channel partners IBM and HP.

The UBS bulletin states:

CSCO is putting renewed focus internally on recouping and gaining share across its traditional businesses given share loss across many product categories in the past year. Management indicate this a key objective for fiscal 2010.

UBS also believes Cisco is in a favorable cash position compared to other tech companies for engaging in mergers and acquisitions, specifically for data center elements such as storage and virtualization. Rumors run hot and cold that Cisco might acquire EMC and/or VMware or NetApp.
