The infamous Project Pink is back in the spotlight.
The infamous Project Pink is once again causing buzz. Unnamed sources are claiming that the project will produce a Microsoft-branded tablet as well as a mobile phone (also known as the so-called Zune phone). Project Pink last hit the rumor mill back in April. This time more details are circulating. It could either be one handset or possibly two devices–codenamed ‘Turtle’ and ‘Pure,’ according to Engadget.
According to PC World.
The new Microsoft-branded phones could also be slider handsets inspired by the Sidekick. Microsoft acquired Danger, the maker of the Sidekick, last year and the Danger team that came to Microsoft is leading Project Pink development. Pink software is reportedly based on the yet-to-be-released Windows Mobile 7.
Pink has been a favorite prediction of blogger Mary Jo Foley, who was also one of the forces creating today’s renewed speculation, but it has yet to materialize. Foley says that Microsoft has not confirmed to her that Pink exists. However, a reader sent her a job posting at Microsoft that mentioned the “new V1 Pink team” and seemed to validate the project’s existence, if not its scope of work.
The idea of Microsoft-branded mobile hardware is somewhat intriguing for the enterprise. In a utopian world, if the IT department could go to Microsoft for the desktop OS, the productivity wares and the mobile infrastructure and devices as well, that could be attractive. But the fact is that companies are trying to wean themselves from over dependence on one vendor, particularly Microsoft. There is also this teeny little issue that Windows Mobile is light years behind competitive products like the iPhone.
