Cisco had a solid third quarter, posting pro forma earnings a penny better than expectations, on revenue in line with those expectations. For the period ended May 1, Cisco recorded sales of $5.6 billion, a 21.7% increase over the same period a year ago and a 4.1% increase from the second quarter of fiscal 2004. Pro forma net income for the third quarter was $1.4 billion, or 19 cents per share, compared with $1.1 billion, or 15 cents per share, for the third quarter of fiscal 2003, and $1.3 billion, or 18 cents per share, for the second quarter of fiscal 2004. Analysts were expecting Cisco’s Service Provider bookings increased in the mid-single digits from the second quarter. The company expects to hire an additional 1,000 employees this year and for revenue to grow 3% to 5% in the fourth quarter.
