The newest software for Palm’s Tungesten W handheld includes at least a dozen changes, including an always-on feature for GSM/General Packet Radio Service connections.

The Tungsten line is aimed at enterprise users and has an array of features not found in Palm’s Zire products, which are designed for the consumer market. The W model is designed as a data handheld, with a built-in keyboard and color screen. Carrier-activate, it links to GSM/GPRS cellular nets, and supports wireless e-mail, text messaging, Internet browsing and some voice phone features.

Among the changes in Tungsten W Software Update 1.0, running on Palm OS 4.1.2, are:

* Always-on connection: even when you turn the device off, the GPRS connection remains active.

* VersaMail 2.5.2: includes a feature that automatically downloads new mail to the handheld and notifies the user; new synchonization for local Lotus Notes mail; support for 11 user-defined folders in Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino or IMAP mail systems; 128-bit encryption based on Advanced Encryption Standard.

* New version, 2.1, of Palm Web Pro Web browser, which is based on Novarra’s software: now a proxyless browser, which lets enterprise users securely access corporate intranets when using a VPN client.

* Keylock: by selecting this option, users disable (or “lock”) all keys, except the Power key, when the Tungsten W turns off.

* Support for TTY services offered by the carrier for hearing-impaired users.

The update can be downloaded free from the Palm Support Web site. A CD of the software also is available from The Palm Store for $29.95. The Palm Tungsten W handheld has an estimated street price of $419. The price excludes wireless service or any activation rebate. Price varies according to network operator and sales channel.
