Check out Craig Mathias’ thorough-going evaluation of how “power save mode” for 802.11 wireless gear doesn’t save power and often degrades throughput.
A member of the Network World Lab Alliance, Craig devised to test to find out if the WLAN power conservation measures actually worked.
From his conclusion: “Overall, though, it was clear that PSM was not contributing to significantly longer runtimes, and thus appears to have a negligible impact on notebook battery life. Moreover, in most cases, throughput was adversely affected and, where it was not, no real benefit was noted.”
