Microsoft will include Windows Home Server in its Microsoft Action Pack, an annual subscription package available to IT professionals, students and partners who develop Windows software. It’s like a starter developer package with full copies of several operating systems (Vista, XP) application suites (such as Office), and development tools. The fledgling Windows Home Server will be included as of October.
Home Server shipped in November and was advertised like mad for the 2007 holiday season but hasn’t been received with overwhelming success. It is Microsoft’s attempt at network-attached storage (and it comes as an appliance on hardware from HP, Life|ware and others). Despite its name, it really isn’t an OS that runs on a PC and is intended to build home networks, says PC Magazine. It has received positive, but not overwhelming reviews. By pushing it out into the hands of the IT folks and developers who subscribe to Action Pack, people may take a bigger interest in it and help it stand above the home NAS crowd.
