For all the fury over the topic, this isn’t something that is going to be resolved any time soon. It is easy to make Microsoft out to be the big bad guy and because they appear to be more motivated by their pocketbooks than by their customer’s needs, the characterization is probably justifiable. Still, if proprietary software vendors go away and the world becomes open source, is that really better? It may not even be much different, given that open source vendors are still selling their products, via subscriptions. Enterprises want stuff that works and want accountability. That’s more difficult to do on an open source model.
