Avaya was not bought by Nortel and was not bought by Cisco – instead, the IP telephony company was taken private in an $8.2 billion deal. Today, Nick Lippis says this is the best outcome for customers (though there has been some doubt cast). Lippis also argues that an Avaya-Nortel deal would have been the best result for Cisco, since it would have taken those companies a year to integrate and presumably would have given Cisco that much time to counter.
