The Xbox community has been infuriated and frustrated by ongoing hardware failures with their favorite toy. Today, Microsoft stepped up and announced it would be extending its warranty to three years against hardware failures, indicated by three flashing lights on the console. It expects this action to cost $1 billion – is taking that as a charge against earnings for the quarter that ended in June, it says.
Microsoft’s Peter Moore wrote an open letter to the Xbox community, published in its entirely on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 site.
Moore promises:
“If a customer has an issue indicated by the three flashing red lights, Microsoft will repair the console free of charge—including shipping—for three years from the console’s purchase date. We will also retroactively reimburse any of you who paid for repairs related to problems indicated by this error message in the past. …
“If we have let any of you down in the experience you have had with your Xbox 360, we sincerely apologize.”
