A federal judge reversed a jury verdict that awarded $1.52 billion to Alcatel-Lucent SA from Microsoft’s coffers. The original verdict was reached in February, when a jury decided that Microsoft’s Windows Media software violated Alcatel-Lucent-controlled patents relating to MP3. The judge said the damage award wasn’t valid because it appears Microsoft infringed on only one patent, not two, as Alcatel-Lucent had claimed. A new trial must now be held.
