Over on Tech Republic Debra Littlejohn Shinder gives us ’10 Things you should know about VoIP over wireless’. Well here is my 10 things about 10 things: * #1: Wireless VoIP offers advantages over cellular service – I am clear that simply offering cheap phones calls will NOT speed things up * #2: VoIP over wireless LAN has many uses – It does and it includes collaborative tools * #3: WiMAX extends the reach of VoIP yep but I am not holding my breath and Sprint is not going to give it away * #4: Voice transmission is more sensitive than data transmission Yep… * #5: Mixing VoIP and data can degrade call quality double yep with out the right kit * #6: Security is a bigger concern over wireless true too but you mix your security with your need. Open VoIP calls over the internet are just that. If you really want to listen to me talk to my mum, knock yourself out… * #7: Older wireless LAN equipment isn’t ready for VoIP double yep and that goes for the $50 linksys you bought * #8: Wireless VoIP equipment is available at consumer and enterprise levels that is true but I am still not paying $200 for a wireless VoIP phone for home… * #9: VoIP over wireless smart phones can save companies money hmmmmm……. * #10: Future phones will combine cellular and Wi-Fi VoIP true but again we need to go through several upgrade cycles before it takes hold
