All of a sudden, Citrix goes from being an almost also-ran in the forthcoming battle to one of the big three, possessing one of the big four: a hypervisor, OS virtualization, application virtualization, and VM management.
In the important Windows Server space, Microsoft’s stripping out of Viridian from Server 2008 now seems premature, as the need for the hypervisor now takes on amazing urgency, since it (Microsoft) would now have to face a competitor with a complete virtualization stack (CitSource? Xentrix?), rather than one without the application virtualization component, VMware.
- Microsoft’s virtualization stack consists of: Virtual PC, Virtual Server, SoftGrid, System Center Virtual Machine Manager, and the missing hypervisor, codename ‘Viridian’.
