Microsoft has hired Limelight Networks to help it boost the performance of its online services. The two also intend to jointly develop acceleration technologies, according to the companies. Limelight is a Web caching/streaming/acceleration service based in Tempe, Ariz., that competes with Akamai. The company said it will cross-license technology with Microsoft. Details were scarce but a quote from Limelight’s CEO from Bloomberg News says that the on-demand video will be the focus.
“’There’s a massive wave of content coming down the pipe,’ Lunsford said. ‘There’s a substantial amount of work that remains to deliver broadcast-quality internet video consumption to the masses. That’s what we hope to do with Microsoft.’”
