Shares of Research In Motion were hotter than hot today thanks to media reports that Microsoft is interested in acquiring the wireless messaging company. The speculation centers on the idea that Microsoft wants RIM to help it do battle with Google who is reportedly working on its own mobile operating system and phone.
Many analysts don’t believe the rumor, saying that such a purchase would be far too expensive for Microsoft, in a market where it already has its own operating system and numerous hardware partners cranking out devices. In a blog post by Richard Martin of InformationWeek, he points out:
“Microsoft would be spending something close to 22% of its market cap on a company that produces 10% of Redmond’s revenues.”
Sounds pretty unlikely, doesn’t it? Whatever Microsoft will do in response to the gPhone” — which has not yet been formally announced either — remains to be seen.
