Microsoft finally admitted what many of us suspected: No major Vista improvements until next year, maybe as late as spring time 08. That fits their more or less normal time frame, if I remember back to the release of Service Packs for Windows XP and Windows 2000. Operating system ships one year, the fixes ship about a year later. My advice remains consistent from about a year ago when Vista’s release seemed close (fooled us, but still, it seemed close at the time). I said wait until the first Service Pack release before jumping into Vista. If you bought a new computer this year, particularly the last few months, you already have some flavor of Vista whether you wanted it or not. But if you can hold out a little longer, by next April new computers should ship with Vista Service Pack 1 and be a much better computer and operating system combination. The most fun in the next few months? Watching
the hype machine from Apple go into high gear about their operating system upgrade, then seeing all the “experts” screaming for attention to hype their favorite operating system. It will be a noisy fall, so buy earplugs. I wouldn’t be surprised if two major Linux operating system vendors brought out new upgrades, either. They won’t get near the marketing push, but there will be some screaming from the Linux fans as well. Maybe you should buy earplugs and noise canceling headphones to wear over them.
