Cisco’s announcement this week of its optical networking win in China is pretty significant because the deal didn’t go to local vendors Huawei Technologies (which, along with Bain Capital, bought Cisco’s longtime rival 3Com in October) or ZTE Corp, says Heavy Reading analyst Sterling Perrin, as reported in LightReading.com. Although Cisco has snagged optical deals in the past with Hong Kong businesses, the win with Shanghai’s Oriental Cable Network is Cisco’s first optical deal in mainland China.
Oriental Cable Network Co. Ltd.selected the Cisco ONS 15454 Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP) and reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) technology for its digital television optical transport platform. Oriental Cable, the world’s largest cable television city network, becomes the first network service provider in mainland China to deploy ROADM technology.
