Corporate lawyers are being ushered into the social networking world by Cisco General Counsel Mark Chandler. Chandler headed up a group of nine companies that last year formed a company called Qulas to develop a social networking site for legal eagles called Legal OnRamp. Not anyone can view inside the site though, and even if are a lawyer you have to be invited, according to a story in Law.com.
Law.com writes that there are some similiarities to Facebook, minus the teenagers:
Legal OnRamp functions as a networking site with the primary function of keeping both its private practice and in-house users connected on a daily basis. Unlike established professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, which is essentially an online directory of business cards, Legal OnRamp shares many of the same features that have turned Facebook into a global addiction, such as “walls” where users can post messages to each other, group functions which are closed to nongroup members and open forums for discussion and document sharing.
Although membership is by invitation-only, some 175 companies have signed up since its inception in November. Among the site’s current users are Chris Kelly, general counsel at Facebook, Royal Bank of Canada general counsel David Allgood, Novellus legal head Marty Collins and legal IT consultant Richard Susskind, according to Law.com.
What next? A Second Life for lawyers? Betcha someone somewhere in Ciscoland is trying to sell the idea of TelePresence in courts.
