Every bit of news last week was about Mac storage. At the Macworld Expo in San Francisco, attendees heard about two new versions of backup software and services for the Mac and a new RAID adapter.
Both EMC and Iron Mountain are releasing software and services for the Mac – EMC is rolling out Retrospect backup and recovery software, Iron Mountain is now supporting Mac backups with its Connected storage-as-a-service offering.
EMC Retrospect 8.0 is an alternative to Apple’s Time Machine and to enterprise-level backup applications. EMC has enhanced the software with a new user interface, a new Retrospect 8.0 engine called the Retrospect server, backup-to-disk capability and custom reporting. The Retrospect server runs as a process in Mac OS X and handles all backup, restore and copy functions.
In addition, it can handle multiple activities – it can back two computers simultaneously while restoring a third.

Retrospect 8.0 for Mac is expected to ship this quarter. The Desktop 3-User version is $129; the Single Server version is $809; and, a Multi Server version is available for $1,669.
Iron Mountain Digital took Macworld as an opportunity to add support for Mac OS X. The company’s Connected Backup solution is expected to be available in March for Mac users.
The Connected Backup service lets businesses protect Macs, as well as PCs and gives IT control of secure backup and restoration both inside and outside company firewalls. It allows non-intrusive backup of Macs and PC over dial-up connections, encryption during transmission and on the disk, and the ability to roll a Mac back to a previous working state.
Finally, ATTO Technology announced the FastStream SC 8500 – an 8GB Fibre Channel storage controller with connectivity to 3GB Serial Attached SCSI and Serial ATA storage.
