EMC, IBM, Gluster introduce replication, geoparity capability

EMC last week announced enhancements to its Isilon IQ 108NL and its cloud-enabled Atmos platform. The company introduced IQ 108NL, an Isilon node that allows the scale-out NAS system to exceed 15PB under a single file system and volume. 

Focusing on organizations with ‘big data’ — applications that generate large volumes of unstructured and often distributed data — the appliance also provides support for EMC’s SmartLock data retention application, which allows for tamper-proof and verifiable data. The Isilon IQ 108NL uses Isilon’s OneFS operating system and 3TB drives. It is available starting at $123,500. SmartLock starts at $1,950 a node.

EMC also introduced Atmos 2.0 another big data platform for the cloud, which is five times as fast as its predecessor and by EMC’s claims 65% more efficient. Atmos 2.0 can store more than 500 million objects per day. Another new feature of EMC Atmos is its GeoParity software, which separates objects into chunks or segments and distributes them throughout the cloud. The parity feature allows objects to be reassembled from three of the four chunks (segments) of data. An SDK for Amazon S3 is also available.

IBM rolled out new tape libraries, archiving solutions and enhanced reduplication appliances. The IBM System Storage TS3500 Tape Library uses shuttle technology to connect as many as 15 tape libraries into a single complex. The company also announced tape library support for the IBM Linear Tape File System Library Edition (LTFS LE), which allows users to index, search and retrieve data form LTO-5 tape cartridges. IBM also rolled out enhancements to its scale out NAS solution, SONAS, which now scales to over 14PB of data. The new enhancements include double the throughput of its predecessor and support for NDMP, allowing clients to backup and protect data. The company also added many-to-many replication capability to its TS7650 ProtecTIER Deduplication Solution.

Gluster announced that continuous replication capability is now available with its GlusterFS Version 3.2. Continuous Data Replication allows customers to provide multi-site replication within the cloud and includes enhanced multi-tenant management with usage quotas and performance statistics. Version 3.2 of Gluster is available for all Gluster solutions, including those for public clouds (the Gluster AMI and Rightscale Template) and private clouds (the Virtual Storage Appliances for VMware, KVM, and Xen, and the recently announced Gluster Software Appliance). The open source version of GlusterFS 3.2 was also released to the community.

Geo-replication is asynchronous and once the entire data set is replicated, incremental with only changes being replicated over the LAN, WAN or Internet.

Disk space quotas can be set by directories or volumes and administrators can monitor I/O operations, latency and the amount of data written.

Additionally, the company introduced a software-based appliance for private cloud deployments that allows admins to create pools of GlusterFs nodes running Red Hat HCL-certified servers and Red Hat CentOS. The Storage Software Appliance is POSIX-compliant and allows CPU, memory and capacity to be aggregated into a scale-out NAS implementation managed under a global namespace.
