Smaller model, easier to operate
EMC today announced the Symmetrix VMAXe system, a high-end storage system that has a smaller footprint than previous Symms and includes local and remote replication support. Like prior VMAX systems, the VMAXe uses the Virtual Matrix Architecture. Although smaller than the previous VMAX, the VMAXe includes software that eases and speeds installation, configuration and management.
The new VMAXe is fits in EMC’s storage portfolio between the entry level Symmetrix VMAX and the VNX/CLARiiON and is targeted for emerging international markets. While there may be some overlap with existing EMC storage, the ‘simpler and pre-configured’ tag applies to the especially to the VMAXe.
The VMAXe uses Intel multi-core processors for its engines and can scale to as many as four engines (each with 96GB cache) and as much as 960 Fibre Channel, SATA or solid state drives. It supports FAST VP for efficient use of flash drives and tiering or migration of data. In addition, the VMAXe uses EMC TimeFinder replication software for local replication. Built-in EMC Virtual Provisioning allows for capacity allocation as needed. Configured in a 19-inch rack, the VMAXe uses single-phase power so it can be installed in virtually any data center.
Further the VMAXe is integrated with EMC RecoverPoint and a simplified management console has been introduced. Included in the management console is EMC Symmetrix Console and Performance Analyzer and EMC PowerPath SE automated path software.
The VMAXe will be available from EMC Velocity partners (a first for Symms) or through EMC directly.
