Oracle recently announced the Oracle Exadata Storage Expansion Rack, a monster storage device for supporting its Oracle Exadata Database Machine.
The rack allows storing of structured and unstructured data, backups of Oracle Exadata Database Machine, weblogs and historical relational data. It comes with 96TB to more than 3PB of storage with only included InfiniBand switches and more than 10PB of user data can be stored with the included Exadata Hybrid Columnar Compression. Flash capability is also part of the Exadata Storage Expansion Rack and ranges from 1.5TB to 47TB of capacity.
The Exadata Storage Expansion Rack has redundant 40Gbps InfiniBand connectivity, hot-swappable disks, power supplies and fans and support for a variety of Exadata Storage software. It is available in three configurations that all include 2TB SAS disks and Exadata Smart Flash Cache. The first version is a full rack consisting of 18 Exadata Storage Servers with as much as 6.75TB of Smart Flash cache, 432 TB of disk and 216 CPU cores for SQL processing in storage.
The second model is a half rack with nine Oracle Exadata Storage Servers, 3.4 TB of Smart Flash Cache, 216 TB of disk and 108 CPU cores. And, finally a third model that consists of a quarter rack with four Oracle Exadata Storage Servers, 1.5TB of Oracle Exadata Smart Flash Cache, 96 TB of disk and 48 CPU cores. As many as eight racks can be interconnected with InfiniBand to create a capacity of 3,360TB.
