Apple faithful wonder whether new iPhone or software will be sprung at always sold-out event

Apple on Wednesday finally announced the dates for its Worldwide Developers Conference (Apple WWDC): June 11-15 at San Francisco’s Moscone conference center. Now the race is on for developers to buy tickets for the event, which last year sold out in under 12 hours.

The five-day event is aimed at iOS and OS X developers, with over 100 technical sessions on the agenda. Apple also often uses the conference to announce new products or software updates.

There’s widespread expectation that the company will announce details on iOS 6.0, and widespread hope it might announce the iPhone 5 or whatever the next iPhone model will be called. Though many observers think next Fall is more likely for the latter.

The event, open only to registered Apple developers who agree to a non-disclosure agreement, is among the hottest tickets in tech alongside Google I/O, which sold out in about 20 minutes this year. WWDC tickets cost $1,600 and in a change from recent years, they are non-transferrable.

In recent years, WWDC tickets have quickly surfaced on eBay selling for as much as three times the face value. Last year, Steve Jobs kicked off the event, then handed things over to SVP Phil Schiller.

On the Mac side, the main focus of the event this year will be the newest OS X release, Mountain Lion, which includes a number of UI changes and features imported from the iOS mobile platform.

Other planned events include 100 hands-on labs, with over 1,000 Apple engineers to work directly with developers at the code level and the Apple Design Awards to recognize excellence, innovation and design in software applications for the Apple platforms. Sessions will focus on everything from Safari and the Web to Core OS to App Services.

Online registration and ticket purchases are via the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2012 website.

If you can’t attend, the technical sessions will be posted after the Conference on the Apple Developer website.
