CommVault last week announced an enhanced version of its Simpana data protection and management environment. Simpana 9 provides virtualization, embedded source and target deduplication and migration from legacy software.

It features automatic and transparent integration with target array snapshots and allows the support of new virtual machines from heterogeneous environments. As many as 500 virtual machines can be protected using Simpana’s SnapProtect product.
Simpana 9 also adds new source-side deduplication and policies that allow customers to create multiple protection policies each with its own retention period. The new software now also supports SAP, Microsoft Exchange 2010, IBM DB2 as well as array support for HP, IBM and LSI. With SnapProtect, users can extract documents and messages from Exchange and SharePoint without requiring the original application, a feature that is useful in eDiscovery and search.
Further, CommVault has simplified the licensing for Simpana. The new pricing is based on capacity.
In other more sad news, veteran journalist and friend to many in the storage community, Mark Ferelli, died last week. Mark was editor in chief of Computer Technology Review and a long-time storage reporter, who probably knew more about storage than a lot of us. He died of a massive heart attack boarding a bus on his way to work. Mark leaves his wife and four children.
