Announcements at CES and Storage Visions
Consumer and SMB storage vendors are putting lots of bucks behind development of products announced at CES and the Storage Visions Conference last week.
At CES Iomega added the Personal Cloud to its NAS appliances – the Personal Cloud transfers encrypted data from one NAS device to another for disaster recovery purposes. It runs on Windows, Macintosh and Linux. The company also showed off a 1.5 TB USB 3.0 external drive with a 2.5-inch form factor.
The Iomega Personal Cloud is a patent-pending technology that allows users of Iomega NAS devices link their devices over the Internet and also connect PCs, Macs, iPhones and iPads. It is a completely self-owned and managed system without use or subscription fees. The service connects the Iomega NAS device to the Internet and then remote or local users can connect to it and share information.
At the Storage Visions Conference in Las Vegas last week, Imation announced an RDX storage platform for small- and mid-sized businesses for storing and protecting their business-critical data.
The RDX A8 is a storage device that contains space for eight RDX cartridges. The device attaches to the network via iSCSI and supports as much as 8TB of native capacity. Each RDX cartridge is 1TB. Available in a 2U rackmount or table-top configuration, the RDX A8 also has a USB 3.0 interface allowing connection for single cartridge or external RDX docking stations. USB 3.0 is able to transfer data by as much as three to four times faster than USB 2.0.
The RDX A8 is expected to be available in the first half of this year. Imation also expects to increase cartridge capacities, to add cloud storage capability to the RDX A8 and add government required FIPs security features.
