Company introduces new storage arrays, archive appliance and new VMAX software
EMC had a big week last Tuesday – a record-breaking week, in their own words – with the introduction of new storage arrays, archiving and deduplication and archiving appliances and enhancements to the storage software for its Symmetrix VMAX arrays.
At an event in New York City, EMC unveiled the VNX (we talked about it in the last newsletter), the Data Domain Archiver and new FAST VP software and Federated Live Migration capabilities for its Symmetrix VMAX platform.
The Data Domain Archiver is a long-term retention system for backup and archive data that uses a Data Domain controller and single namespace to backup and archive data at the same time. Performing at as much as 9.8TB per hour, the DD Archiver moves data to an archive after deduplicating it. The DD Archiver has a raw capacity of 768TB and uses policies to move aging data. The DD Archiver is available now.
New Enginuity 5875 software for the Symmetrix VMAX doubles system performance without hardware upgrades. A new version of EMC’s tiering software FAST VP for Fully Automated Storage Tiering with Virtual Pools optimizes systems and in addition supports sub-LUN tiering. Also a new Federated Live Migration capability reduces technology refresh time, allowing customers to migrate open systems hosts and applications off of Symmetrix DMX arrays onto VMAX. This capability requires a multipath driver on the host to do the migration.
In addition, the VMAX now supports Hyper-V virtualization and as many as 5 million virtual machines. The VMAX also now support 10Gigabit Ethernet.
