Two vendors, Kaminario and Intel, introduced solid state/DRAM storage devices this week.
Kaminario rolled out a new appliance, the K2, which uses DRAM and offers a total capacity of 12TBs. The K2 is now available for $50,000 and is intended for use with I/O intensive applications such as online transaction processing or databases. The appliance includes mirrored storage combined with automatic data recovery. For further data availability it has redundant Fibre Channel connectivity and an integrated uninterruptible power supply.
The K2 scales performance and capacity independently of each other. An entry-level system could contain 500GB of storage and deliver 140,000 IOPs with 1.6GBps throughput. A maximum capacity K2 appliance could deliver 1.5 million IOPS with 16GBps throughput. As proof of its intent to deliver speed, Kaminario just joined the Storage Performance Council.
Intel stepped another 10 yards into the SSD arena with the introduction of its third-generation solid state drive – the 320 series – a family that uses 25nm Intel NAND Flash Memory and is available in 40G, 80G, 120G, 160G, 300G and 600GB capacities. Designed for desktop and notebook PCs and servers, the new 320 Series is $100 less than the companies X25-M SSD model.
The new SSDs replace the X25-M SATA SSD and uses the 3Gbps SATA II interface to deliver as much as 39,500 IOPs for random reads and 23,000 IOPS for random writes.
Pricing for the SSDs in 1,000-unit quantities, are as follows: 40GB at $89; 80GB at $159; 120GB at $209; 160GB at $289; 300GB at $529 and 600GB at $1,069.
