SNIA/SSG-NOW survey launches
At Storage Networking World this week in Santa Clara, Calif., Storage Strategies NOW (SSG-NOW) and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) will be launching the results of an IT Professionals Cloud Storage Adoption Survey.
Among 133 respondents consisting of CIO/CTOs, IT managers, storage administrators and storage architects, the survey found some surprising results.
Where you might expect from listening to vendor cloudwashing, the storage of backup data is the primary use for cloud storage. In the study, respondents say backup data was their second choice for the cloud. Sixty-six percent of the respondents said that they would use the cloud for e-mail data while 59% said they would use it for storing backup data.
Another finding was in the perception of cloud storage itself – 75% of the CIO/CTOs taking the survey said that they would adopt cloud storage; only 54% of IT operations staff – IT managers, storage administrators, storage architects – said they were going to use cloud storage.
Among other findings were that 14% said they would use cloud storage to reduce the cost of ownership and 14% to increase business agility.
Not surprisingly, 30% said that SNIA’s Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI) standard was important for public/hybrid cloud storage deployments. Being asked, these same respondents – over 57% of them – said they would like to see cloud storage credentials and certification from SNIA.
