Also introduces a rapid provisioning tool for VMware environments
Symantec on Tuesday announced two new software packages, ApplicationHA and VirtualStore, which let customers virtualize business-critical applications and protect them in VMware environments.
Black Hats winning: Syumantec
ApplicationHA is based on Veritas Cluster Server technology and provides high availability and gives visibility and control into business-critical applications such as SQL Server, Exchange, Oracle and SAP. The company claims that businesses are not virtualizing business-critical applications because until now there has been no way to ensure their high availability since VMware HA only provides for high availability of physical servers.
Symantec worked closely with VMware to develop ApplicationHA. The two companies did joint research and have weekly product post-mortem meetings to make sure that ApplicationHA is working the right way in virtual environment.
VirtualStore is based on Veritas Storage Foundation technology and provides storage management and provisioning for VMware virtual machines. Both products are integrated into VMware vCenter Server.
Symantec ApplicationHA specifically monitors the health of applications and detects failure in virtual machines. Once a virtual machine failure has been detected, ApplicationHA restarts the failed application and works with VMware HA to restart the virtual machine.
Symantec VirtualStore is a software-based NAS product that allows servers and storage to scale independently. It provisions virtual machines and optimizes the storage assigned to them. VirtualStore includes a FileSnap feature that allows the cloning and provisioning of virtual machines.
Symantec ApplicationHA is expected to be available in September for $350 per virtual machine. VirtualStore is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of this year on a per server pricing model.
