* CommVault Operations Management Service archives, replicates and indexes content
CommVault this week announced the second component of its Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering – a remote management service that small, midsize or enterprise businesses can deploy to manage their storage environments.
Called Remote Operations Management Service (ROMS for short), the service installs listening software on the customers’ CommVault CommServe server, which allows CommVault to monitor, report on and proactively fix and advise on problems in the data protection environment.
“Think of it as software call home,” says Robert Brower, director, Worldwide Professional Services for CommVault.
“It’s not just backup – it’s archive, it’s replication, its content indexing, it’s the ability to look at any managed access to protected information that CommVault touches within an environment,” says Brower. “We listen for alerts so that we can capture those, send them back home and be able to support our customers in a real-time situation.”
CommVault previously launched a backup service for Managed Service Providers (MSP) that lets small and midsize businesses manage their data backup needs. Among the MSPs CommVault has signed up are DBSi and Rackspace.
ROMS installs MediaAgents on a CommVault CommServe StorageManager server – a dual-homed server that coordinates and administrates the CommCell.
Each CommCell consists of several types of DataAgents, which perform backup and restore operations, migrations, archiving and recovery and replication, as well as one or more Media Agents, which manage the storage devices (tape libraries, autoloaders or disk-based systems).
The CommServe communicates with all agents in the CommCell to initiate data protection, management and recovery operations. It also communicates with the MediaAgents when the media subsystem requires management and it maintains a database (based on SQL Server) that contains all the information relating to the CommCell. In addition, it provides several tools to administer and manage the CommCell.
Once installed and configured, these CommCell elements can be controlled and monitored from a single unified CommCell Console.
ROMS will let customers address their operational and system availability needs. It provides on-demand reporting and monitoring capabilities for data management, access and protection technologies. Customers have access to ROMS through a Web dashboard, where they can access and track real-time alert, trends and storage usage reports.
CommVault ROMS is available as a subscription service and is licensed per server. It supports both CommVault’s Simpana and QiNetix products.
The ROMS service is 25% of the list price per year of the CommServe and MediaAgents installed.
